A Critically Endangered Stronghold
Deep within the rugged Tenasserim Hills of western Thailand lies the Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM), a vast expanse of protected land covering over 18,700 square kilometers. This forest is one of the last two major strongholds for the Indochinese leopard, Panthera pardus delacouri. This subspecies is now classified as Critically Endangered, having vanished from more than 95% of its historical range. Populations have been wiped out in Singapore, Laos, and Vietnam, with remnant groups barely surviving in Cambodia and southern China. The primary driver of this collapse is widespread poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, compounded by prey depletion and habitat destruction.
The leopards of the Western Forest Complex represent an important reservoir of genetic diversity. As other populations across Southeast Asia became isolated and eventually disappeared, the leopards in this mountainous refuge maintained a unique genetic lineage. This makes the Thai population essential for the long-term survival of the subspecies. The forest complex, which includes 17 contiguous protected areas like the Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), provides enough space and resources to support a viable population. This genetic distinction shows the area's importance as a natural laboratory for conservation and evolution.
Life in the Forest Complex
The Western Forest Complex is the largest protected area in mainland Southeast Asia, a mosaic of evergreen and deciduous forests that supports high biodiversity. It hosts over 150 mammal species, 490 bird species, and 90 species of reptiles. Here, leopards share the landscape with other large carnivores, including tigers, clouded leopards, and dholes. Studies within the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, a core part of the complex, have estimated leopard densities as high as 6.3 individuals per 100 square kilometers, though densities are lower in areas with higher tiger populations.
Researchers rely on non-invasive techniques to study these elusive cats. A network of camera traps spread across animal trails provides data on population numbers, distribution, and behavior. The unique rosette pattern on each leopard's coat acts like a fingerprint, allowing scientists to identify individual animals. This method helps monitor the health of the population without direct contact. The presence of these apex predators indicates a healthy ecosystem with a sufficient prey base, including sambar deer, wild pigs, and macaques. Conservation efforts focus on anti-poaching patrols and habitat restoration to ensure the leopards—and the entire ecosystem they inhabit—can continue to thrive.
