A continental crossroads
The Tenasserim Range creates a long mountainous spine separating Myanmar from Thailand. For millennia, this barrier has shaped the distribution of life in Southeast Asia. The Kawkareik Pass is the lowest gap in this wall, a funnel for animal movement and a distinct meeting point for separate biogeographical zones. The pass lies within the broader Dawna-Tenasserim Landscape, which marks the transition between the Indochinese zoogeographic subregion to the north and the Sundaic subregion to the south.
This location is a complex intersection of four different biogeographic zones: the Indo-Burmese, Indo-Chinese, Sundaic, and Sino-Himalayan. This overlap contributes to an high species diversity. The western slopes on the Myanmar side receive significantly more rainfall from the Bay of Bengal than the drier eastern slopes in Thailand, creating different forest types. The Myanmar side supports vast tracts of lowland evergreen forest, while Thailand's side is a mosaic of evergreen and deciduous forests. This environmental gradient across the pass further drives the variety of species found here. Genetic studies on various animals, including felids and bulbuls, confirm a deep evolutionary divergence between Indochinese and Sundaic populations, making this transitional zone an area of scientific interest.
The camera trap sentinels
Modern science confirms the ancient role of the Kawkareik Pass as a biological corridor. Conservation organizations like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) use extensive camera trapping to monitor the variety of life moving through the region. These motion-activated cameras provide data on the presence and behavior of rare and secretive animals.
The list of species documented in the Dawna-Tenasserim Landscape is extensive, with over 160 mammal and 560 bird species recorded. Camera traps regularly capture images of Indochinese tigers (Panthera tigris), Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), and clouded leopards (Neofelis nebulosa). The area is a stronghold for wild cats; seven of the nine species in Southeast Asia live here, including the marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) and the Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii).
The images also reveal the presence of Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica) and Malayan tapirs (Tapirus indicus), animals more typical of the Sundaic region to the south. This mix of fauna makes the landscape globally significant for conservation. The data collected is used to understand population densities and movement patterns, which informs strategies to protect these species from threats like habitat fragmentation from road construction and poaching.
