A Planet-Sized Problem
In the early 19th century, the exact size and shape of Earth was still a subject of scientific debate. Isaac Newton's theory predicted that the planet's rotation should cause it to be an oblate spheroid—flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. To prove this, and to calculate the planet's dimensions with precision, German-born astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve undertook a monumental task: measuring a long segment of a meridian arc.
The project, which ran from 1816 to 1855, was the most ambitious geodetic survey of its time. It involved establishing a chain of 258 main triangles and 265 primary station points. This chain of triangulations stretched 2,820 kilometers, from Fuglenes in Hammerfest, Norway, all the way to Stara Nekrasivka on the coast of the Black Sea in Ukraine. At the time, this entire colossal arc passed through just two political entities: the Union of Sweden and Norway, and the Russian Empire. Today, the points are located in ten different countries. The survey was a project of international scientific collaboration, requiring the official sanction of King Oscar I and Russian Emperors Alexander I and Nicholas I.
The method used was triangulation. Surveyors would measure a baseline distance with extreme accuracy, then use theodolites to measure the angles from each end of the baseline to a distant landmark, like a church steeple or a specially constructed tower. Knowing one side and two angles allowed them to calculate the lengths of the other two sides of the triangle. This new side would then become the baseline for the next triangle, and so on, creating a continuous chain of measurements across thousands of kilometers.
The Northern Terminus
The point here at Fuglenes, Hammerfest, is the northernmost station point of the entire arc. The work to survey the final Norwegian section, from Kautokeino to Hammerfest, was conducted by Christopher Hansteen between 1845 and 1850. To commemorate the conclusion of this immense 39-year effort, the Meridianstøtten (Meridian Column) was erected on this spot in 1854.
Designed by Wilhelm von Hanno, the monument consists of a granite column topped with a bronze globe. An inscription on the monument reads: "The northernmost endpoint of a meridian arc of 25° 20 from the northern ocean to the Danube river - through Norway, Sweden and Russia. By arrangement of HM Oscar I and Emperors Alexander I and Nicolaus I by uninterrupted geometries. Latitude 70 ° 40 11.3``".
The physical markers of the 265 original station points vary greatly. Many are simple holes drilled in rock, sometimes filled with lead, or iron crosses set in stone. Only a few, like this one, are marked with a formal obelisk or monument. In 2005, the Struve Geodetic Arc was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 34 of the original station points included in the inscription.
