A direct line to the aurora
Positioned two degrees north of the Arctic Circle, Andøya Space Center is one of the few places on Earth where scientists can launch instruments directly into an auroral display. The first rocket, a two-stage solid-propellant vehicle named "Ferdinand 1," was launched on August 18, 1962. Since then, over 1,200 sounding rockets have been launched from this site, carrying scientific payloads into the upper atmosphere. These rockets are not designed for orbit; instead, they fly on sub-orbital trajectories, reaching altitudes from 85 kilometers up to 1,500 kilometers to collect data.
The primary mission at Andøya is to study the physics of Earth's upper atmosphere, particularly the interactions that create the aurora borealis. Sounding rockets carry instruments that take in-situ measurements of atmospheric density, temperature, and plasma turbulence as they pass through the aurora itself. Missions like NASA's AZURE project release visible chemical tracers, such as trimethyl aluminum and a barium/strontium mixture, at altitudes between 114 and 250 kilometers. These glowing clouds, observed from the ground, allow scientists to track the movement of neutral and charged particles within the ionosphere, revealing the forces driving auroral dynamics.
The facility also supports the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research (ALOMAR), which opened in 1994. Located on Ramnan mountain, 379 meters above sea level, ALOMAR uses powerful lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) instruments to probe the atmosphere up to 100 kilometers. Its laser beams provide detailed data on atmospheric conditions, complementing the direct measurements from rocket launches.
Experience space science
The companion visitor center, Spaceship Aurora, is a public entry point into the science conducted at the launch site. The center includes exhibits on the history of Norwegian space exploration, northern lights research, and the technology used at Andøya since its first launch in 1962.
A central feature is a series of virtual missions. Visitors can join a simulated mission to study the aurora or embark on a virtual reality trip to Mars to search for signs of life. These experiences are designed to replicate the teamwork between pilots, engineers, and scientists during a real space mission. The center also shows films covering the history of aurora research and the scale of the cosmos. Interactive displays include a digital climbing wall that functions as a physics-based video game and an activity where you can build and launch a paper rocket.
On January 25, 1995, a scientific rocket launched from Andøya carrying instruments to study the aurora was briefly mistaken by Russian radar operators for a hostile nuclear missile. This event, known as the Norwegian Rocket Incident, triggered a high-level alert before the rocket's trajectory was correctly identified.
