A basin of purple rock
Across the Sichuan Basin, a massive geological depression in southwestern China, thick layers of distinctive purplish-red rock record the history of a lost world. These deposits, known to geologists as "red beds," are composed of sandstones and mudstones that accumulated during the Jurassic Period, between 201 and 145 million years ago. The region at this time was a vast inland basin on the supercontinent Pangea, filled with lakes and traversed by powerful rivers. The rocks belong to several geological units, the Shaximiao and Xujiahe Formations. In total, these sedimentary layers can reach a thickness of several thousand meters.
The striking color of the beds comes from iron oxides, specifically hematite, showing that the original sediments were exposed to an oxygen-rich atmosphere on land. The basin's environment was defined by a climate of extremes, more dramatic than anything in the modern era. This ancient weather pattern was a "mega-monsoon," driven by the vast temperature differences between the interior of Pangea and the surrounding ocean. The result was a cycle of intense wet seasons followed by long dry seasons.
Evidence of ancient weather
The record of this extreme climate is written directly into the rocks. The dry seasons were so severe that entire lakes evaporated, leaving behind layers of salt. Geologists find evidence of this in the form of halite (rock salt) crystal casts preserved within the mudstone. Widespread mudcracks, formed as wet sediment baked and shrank under the sun, also show the intense aridity. During the wet seasons, torrential rains sent huge volumes of water and sediment pouring into the basin, creating the thick sandstone layers and features like ripple marks.
This was the world inhabited by some of the most famous dinosaurs of the Jurassic. The fossilized remains of giant sauropods like Mamenchisaurus and Omeisaurus, as well as the predator Yangchuanosaurus, are found buried within these same purple layers. Their presence shows an ecosystem adapted to a life of seasonal flooding and drought. The Dashanpu fossil site, near the city of Zigong, is one of the world's most concentrated Middle Jurassic dinosaur graveyards, with over 200 individual dinosaurs found. The fossils were likely swept into a large lake during monsoon floods and rapidly buried, leading to their exceptional preservation.

The same geological processes that created the purple beds also formed large underground salt deposits, which have been mined in the Sichuan region for over 2,000 years.
The nutrient-rich soil derived from the weathering of these purple rocks gives the Sichuan Basin its nickname, the "Red Basin," and is a major reason for the region's agricultural fertility.
