The Invisible Contaminant
Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, frequently blanketing the surrounding Kagoshima region with ash. While the visible layers of grey dust are a daily reality for residents, an invisible chemical threat is bound to the surface of these tiny rock fragments. When rain falls on fresh ash, it creates a chemical-rich liquid called a leachate.
This leachate is often acidic and loaded with elements scavenged from the volcanic plume, such as chlorine, sulfur, and especially fluorine. These elements adsorbed onto the surface of ash particles and dissolve readily in water. This process transforms a simple ashfall into a widespread chemical event, contaminating soil, water supplies, and vegetation. The chemical composition of the leachate can fluctuate, with ratios of components like hydrogen chloride to sulfur dioxide (HCl/SO2) changing before eruptions, making it helpful for volcanologists monitoring the volcano's activity.
A Pasture Problem
The high concentration of fluoride in Sakurajima's ash threatens grazing animals. When livestock like cattle consume forage and water contaminated with this fluoride, they can develop a condition known as fluorosis. Fluoride has a strong affinity for calcium and accumulates in bones and teeth. Over time, this buildup displaces normal minerals, leading to skeletal deformities, joint stiffness, lameness, and severe dental wear.
For cattle, dietary fluoride concentrations of 30-40 parts per million (ppm) can lead to bone disease, while levels over 50 ppm can reduce milk yield. Volcanic ash can easily contaminate pastures to these levels and higher. The effects are particularly severe in younger animals whose bones are still developing. This agricultural hazard demonstrates how a geological process can have deep and direct consequences for the local ecosystem and economy. The ash damages crops by physically covering them but also introduces a persistent chemical poison into the food chain.
