A life in darkness
The Eastern Underground Orchid, Rhizanthella slateri, lives its entire life cycle from seed to flower completely below the soil surface. It has no leaves, no roots, and produces no chlorophyll. The plant consists of a fleshy, white underground stem or rhizome, that can grow up to 15 centimeters long. From this rhizome, a flower head emerges, pushing upwards to just below or sometimes barely breaking the surface of the soil and leaf litter. This flowering head contains up to thirty small, tubular, purplish flowers arranged in a tight cluster.
This orchid is a holomycotroph, a type of parasitic plant that forgoes photosynthesis entirely. Instead of creating its own food, it steals nutrients from a specific type of mycorrhizal fungus. This fungus, in turn, has a symbiotic relationship with the roots of nearby trees, particularly eucalypts and shrubs of the Melaleuca genus. The orchid essentially taps into the extensive underground network of the fungus to draw the energy it needs to survive and reproduce, all without ever being exposed to sunlight.
The discovery of the Rhizanthella genus was discovered by accident. The first species, R. gardneri, was found in Western Australia in 1928 by a farmer ploughing his fields. The eastern species, R. slateri, was first officially recorded in 1931 near Bulahdelah, New South Wales, by an amateur naturalist named Ernest William Slater. Due to their cryptic, subterranean existence, these orchids are almost always found by chance when the soil is disturbed.
Subterranean survival
Reproduction for a plant that flowers underground presents unique challenges. Rhizanthella slateri produces a distinct scent, sometimes described as vanilla-like, that permeates the soil and leaf litter. This scent attracts its pollinators: tiny fungus gnats and possibly termites. These insects burrow down through the soil, drawn to the flower head where they facilitate pollination.
After successful pollination, the orchid develops fleshy, berry-like fruits underground. Each fruit can contain hundreds of hard, brown seeds. Unlike most orchids that produce dust-like seeds dispersed by the wind, Rhizanthella's seeds are contained within these indehiscent fruits, meaning they do not split open on their own. Seed dispersal is thought to rely on native digging animals, such as bandicoots or wallabies. These animals are likely attracted to the scent of the mature fruit, consume it, and then disperse the seeds in their droppings, giving the next generation a chance to find a suitable fungal host and begin its own life in the dark.
All species of underground orchids are considered rare and vulnerable. Rhizanthella slateri is listed as 'Endangered' under Australian commonwealth law and 'Vulnerable' in New South Wales. The primary threats include habitat loss from land clearing, inappropriate fire regimes, and disturbance from activities like road construction. Because their exact locations are few and populations are small, they are susceptible to local extinction events.
