A Tectonic Heat Engine
The hot springs of Ranong are a direct surface sign of immense tectonic forces shaping Southeast Asia. Their heat source is not volcanic. It originates from the same deep geological friction that powers earthquakes and tsunamis in the Andaman Sea. The springs are located about 500 kilometers east of the Andaman-Sumatra Subduction Zone, where the Indian-Australian Plate slides beneath the Eurasian Plate. This process generates significant heat deep within the Earth's crust.
This geothermal energy is transported closer to the surface via a network of major fault lines, specifically the Ranong and Khlong Marui strike-slip faults. These extensive fractures are conduits. Meteoric water (rainwater) seeps downwards through cracks in the region's Mesozoic granitic bedrock, circulating to considerable depths where it is heated by the high geothermal gradient. The now superheated, less dense water rises back to the surface along these fault zones. Chemical analysis using geothermometers suggests the deep underground reservoir temperature could be between 100°C and 120°C, much hotter than the water that emerges at the surface.
Geochemical Fingerprints
At the Raksawarin Public Park, the main access point for the springs, the water emerges at a near-constant temperature of 65°C, though other springs in the province can reach up to 80°C. The water is exceptionally pure and, has no discernible sulfur content or smell. This is because the heat source is purely tectonic and not from a magma chamber, which would release sulfurous gases.
The water's chemistry is classified as a K-Na-bicarbonate type. This shows the water's long path through the granitic host rock, dissolving minerals along the way. Despite its mineral content, the water is potable and was even used in royal ceremonies for King Bhumibhol's 60th birthday celebration due to its purity. The main spring system in the park consists of three primary wells, named "Bo Pho" (Father Well), "Bo Mae" (Mother Well), and "Bo Luk" (Child Well). The Father Well is the largest and hottest of the three.
