The Phantom Parasite
Deep in the rainforest of Khao Sok National Park, an organism exists that is different from a typical plant. Rafflesia kerrii is a holoparasite, a plant that derives all of its nutrients from a host. It has no leaves, no stem, and no roots of its own. For most of its life, it is invisible, living as a network of thread-like fibers completely inside its host, a wild grapevine of the genus Tetrastigma. These filaments, which resemble fungal mycelium, infiltrate the vine's tissues to absorb water and nutrients. The only part of Rafflesia kerrii that ever emerges is its enormous, five-petaled flower.
The life cycle is slow and precarious. After a seed somehow penetrates the bark of a Tetrastigma vine, the parasite grows internally for an unknown period. Eventually, a small, cabbage-like bud pushes through the host's bark. This bud takes about nine months to mature before it finally blooms. The resulting flower can reach a diameter of 50 to 90 centimeters (20-35 inches) and weigh up to 7 kilograms (15 pounds). While the average size is impressive, some specimens have been recorded measuring over 111 cm.
A Brief, Smelly Bloom
The flower of Rafflesia kerrii is a large flower. Its five thick, leathery petals are reddish-orange and covered in lighter-colored warts. At its center is a deep bowl containing a spiny central disk. The plant is dioecious, meaning flowers are either male or female. For pollination to occur, a male and female flower must be in bloom at the same time and in close proximity, a rare event.
To attract its pollinators, the flower emits a powerful odor of decaying meat. This scent, produced by osmophores, fools carrion flies (like those from the family Calliphoridae) into visiting. As the flies crawl around inside the flower's central chamber, they may pick up sticky pollen from a male flower or deposit it onto the receptive stigma of a female one. This reproductive window is incredibly short; the massive bloom lasts only five to seven days before it begins to blacken and decay into a pile of black mush. If pollination is successful, the female flower develops a fruit containing thousands of tiny seeds, which are thought to be dispersed by small mammals like tree shrews. The entire process is inefficient, with high bud mortality and a low chance of successful pollination, contributing to the plant's rarity.
