A Volcanic Climate Archive
Rano Kau is an extinct shield volcano that forms the southwestern corner of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Its formation began around 2.5 million years ago with flows of basaltic lava. The volcano stands 324 meters (1,063 feet) tall, and its most prominent feature is a caldera nearly 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) wide. This crater holds one of the island's three natural freshwater lakes, a critical resource on an island with no permanent streams. The lake itself is about 10 meters deep and its surface is largely covered by floating mats of totora reeds (Scirpus californicus).
The crater's floor is a scientific resource. For decades, researchers have extracted sediment cores from the lakebed, drilling down through layers of accumulated material. These cores act as a timeline, preserving pollen, charcoal, and chemical signatures that record the island's environmental past. The oldest records obtained from the crater extend back at least 38,000 years, revealing long-term climate cycles and vegetation changes. Pollen analysis from these deep layers shows that the island was once covered in extensive palm forests, long before human arrival. The data also shows periods of intense drought, such as one that occurred during the Little Ice Age between 1520 and 1710 CE.
