The Quarry of Giants
Nearly every one of Rapa Nui's monolithic human figures, or moai, began its life in the same place: the volcanic crater of Rano Raraku. Between roughly 1250 and 1500 CE, the Rapa Nui people quarried and carved approximately 95% of their ancestral statues from the crater's consolidated volcanic ash, known as tuff. This single location was a massive open-air workshop. Today, 397 moai remain in and around the quarry, many appearing as though the carvers just momentarily stepped away.
The sculptors carved the moai horizontally out of the rock face, completing the front and sides before undercutting a "keel" to detach the massive figure. The statues were then slid down the slope into pre-dug pits to allow carvers to finish their backs. Many moai at Rano Raraku are buried up to their shoulders, not by time, but by the debris from this quarrying process. The largest moai ever carved, known as "El Gigante," lies unfinished in the quarry. Had it been completed and raised, it would have stood nearly 22 meters (72 feet) tall and weighed an estimated 145 to 165 tons.
The Walking Hypothesis
For centuries, the transportation of the moai from Rano Raraku to ceremonial platforms (ahu) around the island was a deep mystery. Oral traditions of the Rapa Nui people consistently maintained that the statues "walked" to their destinations. Modern archaeological research, led by figures like Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo, has demonstrated this. The statues found abandoned along ancient roads have a distinct forward lean and wide, D-shaped bases, features that make them unstable for transport on their backs but ideal for upright movement.
Experiments with a 4.35-ton replica showed that a team of just 18 people using three ropes could efficiently rock a statue from side to side, causing it to shuffle forward in a "walking" motion. This technique moved the replica 100 meters in only 40 minutes. This method also explains the high number of statues found fallen along the roads; a stumble during the walk could easily cause irreparable damage to the multi-ton stone figures. The evidence suggests an engineering solution that required cooperation and skill and not massive deforestation for rollers or sledges.
