A fruitful existence
The name Prasophyllum fecundum shows its biology. The species name fecundum is a Latin word meaning fruitful or prolific. It was first formally described in 1989 by botanist Robert Bates, who chose the name to reflect the orchid's unusually large and swollen ovary, which is often bigger than the rest of the flower. This physical trait is a direct consequence of its highly effective reproductive strategy. This terrestrial orchid is endemic to South Australia, found in scattered populations on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas and in the Barossa Valley.
Orchids are famous for their complex relationships with pollinators, often relying on a single species of insect for reproduction. This dependency can result in a very low rate of pollination and subsequent fruit (seed pod) production. Prasophyllum fecundum bypasses this uncertainty. It is autogamous, meaning its flowers are self-pollinating. This strategy guarantees a high rate of fruit set, removing the plant's dependence on external pollinators. Even though the orchid is self-pollinating, its flowers are still strongly scented, a trait likely retained from ancestors that did rely on attracting insects. It grows in sandy or loamy soils, typically in mallee heathland or native pine woodlands.
