West of the Chindwin River, a complex of 947 caves is carved directly into a sandstone outcrop. This is Pho Win Taung, a massive Buddhist sanctuary active for centuries. The caves, which vary from simple meditation cells to large temples, contain an estimated 400,000 to 450,000 Buddha images and extensive mural paintings. Most of the artwork and statues date from the 14th to the 18th centuries, a period corresponding to the second Ava Kingdom.
The caves are not natural formations; they were excavated by hand from the soft volcanic and sandstone hill. This allowed their creators to determine the specific size and shape of each interior space. The porous quality of the sandstone, combined with the often hemispherical or curved geometry of the chambers, creates distinct acoustic effects. The surfaces absorb some sound frequencies while reflecting and focusing others. This architectural choice has a direct physical consequence on how sound, particularly the human voice, behaves within the temple walls. For practitioners of chanting and ritual prayer, the space itself is part of the religious experience.
Chambers of resonance
The field of archaeoacoustics investigates the role of sound in ancient human environments. While specific acoustic studies of Pho Win Taung are not widely published, the principles of physics explain the resonant effects reported in its chambers. The curved walls and ceilings of many caves can focus sound waves to a specific point, much like a satellite dish. In other configurations, they create a diffuse, enveloping sound field where echoes swirl and sustain. This effect can amplify frequencies in the 100-120 Hz range, the typical fundamental frequency of male chanters. Similar acoustic properties have been measured in other ancient ritual sites, like the prehistoric caves of El Castillo in Spain, which selectively amplify frequencies around 110 Hz.
This amplification suggests an intentional design choice by the builders. By shaping the caves in a particular way, they could increase the sound of monastic chanting, making it seem louder and more resonant. For a monk engaged in solitary meditation or a group performing a ritual, this acoustic environment would heighten the sensory experience, making the chants feel more powerful and immersive. The architecture was likely engineered to produce a specific psychoacoustic effect, transforming a simple stone chamber into a space optimized for spiritual practice.
