From crustal root to mountain peak
The rocks forming the core of the Peloritani Mountains in northeastern Sicily are not native to this part of the world. Geologically, they are a piece of the Iberian plate that detached and migrated over 1000 km eastward. This block of continental crust, known as the Calabrian-Peloritan Arc, was caught in the immense tectonic collision between the African and Eurasian plates during the Alpine orogeny. The collision forced this crustal block downwards, burying it to depths of around 30 kilometers.
At this depth, the rocks experienced extreme conditions. Thermobarometric studies, which analyze the mineral composition of rocks to determine their formation history, show they reached temperatures of 600°C and pressures of 10 kilobars. This intense heat and pressure caused the original rocks to metamorphose, recrystallizing them into new forms. The mountains today are primarily composed of high-grade metamorphic rocks like gneiss, phyllite, and schist., evidence of this deep history. This initial metamorphic event is largely attributed to the much older Variscan orogeny, a mountain-building period that occurred during the Paleozoic era. The rocks of the Peloritani, specifically the Aspromonte Unit, preserve this complex, multi-stage metamorphic history.
The great unroofing
The movement of these rocks from a depth of 30 km to the mountain peaks visible today is a process called exhumation. This "unroofing" occurred over a period of about 20 million years, primarily during the Oligocene and Miocene epochs. The process was driven by large-scale extensional tectonics—the stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust. As the Ionian tectonic slab rolled back into the mantle, it caused the overlying crust to stretch, break, and rise. This extension, combined with millions of years of surface erosion, slowly brought the deep metamorphic core to the surface.
This exhumation is not a gentle lift. It involves massive shear zones and tectonic contacts that pile different rock units on top of one another, creating a complex "nappe-pile edifice". The Peloritani Mountains are the westernmost part of this structure, which connects geologically to the Aspromonte Massif in mainland Calabria. The entire structure is an example of a metamorphic core complex, where deep crustal rocks have been exposed at the surface through a combination of faulting and erosion. The rapid cooling and uplift associated with this process has been tracked using fission track analysis, which dates the final stages of exhumation to between 35 and 15 million years ago.
