A Tear in the Earth's Crust
The seven islands of the Aeolian archipelago are the visible peaks of a much larger underwater volcanic structure that is over 140 kilometers (87 miles) long. This entire volcanic system owes its existence to a slow-motion collision between continents. The African tectonic plate is moving northward at about 2.15 cm per year, pushing against the Eurasian plate. In the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily, a slab of the African plate's oceanic crust—called the Ionian slab—is being forced downwards into the Earth's mantle in a process known as subduction.
As this slab descends, it bends and sinks, creating a deep plane of earthquake activity called a Wadati-Benioff zone, which can be tracked to depths of around 670 kilometers. Water trapped in the minerals of the oceanic crust gets squeezed out as pressure and temperature increase. This water rises into the overlying mantle wedge, lowering its melting point and generating magma. This buoyant, molten rock then ascends to the surface, feeding the volcanoes of the Aeolian Islands. The chemical signature of the lavas varies across the arc, from calc-alkaline in the west to more potassium-rich compositions in the east, showing differences in the mantle source and the subducting slab below.
A Family of Fire-Breathers
Each of the Aeolian Islands has a distinct volcanic character, shaped by more than 260,000 years of activity. Stromboli, in the east, is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, famous for its persistent, rhythmic explosions. These "Strombolian" eruptions occur every 10 to 20 minutes, throwing incandescent lava fragments hundreds of meters into the air. This near-constant activity has been recorded for at least 2,400 years.
To the southwest lies Vulcano, the island that gave us the word "volcano." Its last major eruption was between 1888 and 1890, a series of powerful explosions that defined "Vulcanian" eruptions for volcanologists. Today, Vulcano is in a quiescent state, characterized by fields of fumaroles that emit hot, sulfurous gases from the crater rim.
The largest island, Lipari, has a complex history. While not active as Stromboli, its last eruption was in approximately 580 AD. It is known for its extensive obsidian flows, a black volcanic glass that was an important resource in prehistoric times. Neolithic people quarried Lipari's obsidian to make sharp tools, and it was traded widely across the Mediterranean. Panarea, the smallest island, is the remnant of an older, larger volcano. Its most notable features are now submarine, with extensive hydrothermal systems offshore that release hot, acidic fluids and CO2-dominated gases from the seafloor.
