The forever-young salamander
Deep within the flooded limestone caves of the Dinaric Karst, the olm (Proteus anguinus) lives a life of extreme minimalism. This entirely aquatic salamander is Europe's only cave-dwelling vertebrate, adapted to a world of complete darkness, stable temperatures of 8–11°C and deep food scarcity. Its body, typically 20-30 cm long, is pale and almost translucent, earning it the local name "human fish". The olm is neotenic, meaning it reaches sexual maturity while keeping its larval features, most noticeably its three pairs of feathery external gills.
To survive in an environment where food is unpredictable, the olm has developed a high resistance to starvation. When food is available—typically small crustaceans, snails, and insects—it eats as much as possible, storing energy as lipids and glycogen in its liver. When food disappears, it can dramatically lower its metabolic rate and enter a near-static state. This metabolic shutdown is so effective that an olm can survive for up to a decade without a single meal. During prolonged fasting, it systematically uses its energy reserves, first depleting sugars, then lipids, and finally, only in severe cases, reabsorbing its own muscle tissue.
A life of stillness
The olm's energy conservation strategy extends to its movement, or lack thereof. Field studies using capture-mark-recapture methods have revealed a very sedentary lifestyle. On average, an individual moves just 5 meters (about 16 feet) per year. The data shows extreme cases of inactivity; one specimen was recorded in the exact same spot for 2,569 days, over seven years. This minimal energy expenditure on movement is a direct adaptation to its nutrient-poor home.
This slow-paced existence is paired with an exceptionally long life. Biologists project a maximum lifespan for the olm of over 100 years, making it one of the longest-living amphibians known. Its reproductive cycle is similarly unhurried. Females reach sexual maturity around age 16 and may only lay eggs once every 12.5 years. In the dark, olms have no use for sight, and their eyes are undeveloped and covered by skin. To navigate, find mates, and locate scarce prey, they rely on a suite of highly developed senses. They have an acute sense of smell, able to detect very low concentrations of organic compounds in the water. They also possess mechanoreceptors to sense water movement and unique ampullary organs on their head that can detect weak electric fields.
