The Human Fish of Eternal Night
Deep in the subterranean waters of the Dinaric Karst, the olm (Proteus anguinus) lives in a world of complete darkness. This aquatic salamander is Europe's only true cave-dwelling vertebrate. Its skin lacks pigmentation, giving it a pale, fleshy color that earned it the nickname "human fish". Typically 20-30 cm long, the olm navigates the narrow passages of its underwater habitat with a slender, serpentine body.
An important feature of the olm is its neoteny—it retains larval characteristics throughout its life. This is most visible in its feathery external gills, which it uses to breathe underwater even as a fully mature adult. Its eyes are a example of evolutionary adaptation to darkness; they develop normally in the larval stage but begin to regress after about four months, eventually becoming covered by a layer of skin and rendering the adult functionally blind.
A Symphony of Senses
To survive without sight, the olm has developed an array of sensitive non-visual systems. Its large, flattened head carries an increased number of sensory receptors. Chemoreceptors in its nasal epithelium are more developed than in other amphibians, allowing it to detect very low concentrations of organic compounds to locate scarce prey like small crabs, snails, and insect larvae.
The olm also possesses a finely tuned system of mechanoreceptors. Its inner ear detects sound waves and ground vibrations, while a lateral line organ, similar to those in fish, registers low-frequency water displacements nearby. Most remarkably, the olm can detect weak electric fields. Its head is covered in ampullary organs that function as electroreceptors, sensing the minute bioelectric fields generated by potential prey. Some studies suggest it may also use this sense to orient itself with the Earth's magnetic field. This suite of senses allows the olm to hunt and navigate with precision in an environment where light has no role.
Baby Dragons and Extreme Longevity
The olm’s life is characterized by an extremely slow pace. With a low metabolic rate, it can reduce its activity and survive for up to a decade without food, sometimes even reabsorbing its own tissues. This slow metabolism contributes to an extraordinary lifespan, with a predicted maximum of over 100 years and an average adult lifespan of around 68.5 years.
Reproduction is an infrequent event, occurring perhaps only once every 12.5 years. For centuries, the creature's life cycle was a mystery. When heavy rains would wash them from the caves, local folklore identified them as the offspring of a cave-dwelling dragon. In 2016, this legend came to life when a female olm in a Postojna Cave aquarium laid over 60 eggs. The successful hatching of 21 "baby dragons" was an event of global scientific interest, showing the at the early development of this elusive animal.
