A Climate Collision
Between 1877 and 1879, the Brazilian northeast, or Nordeste, experienced a catastrophic failure of its rainy season. Known as the Grande Seca, or Great Drought, this was not a localized event. It was the regional manifestation of a powerful El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event that disrupted weather patterns globally. This powerful climatic shift caused synchronous droughts and famines in Asia and Africa. In Ceará, the annual rainfall, which typically averages 800 mm, can decrease by more than 50% during extreme droughts. In 1877, the rains effectively ceased, turning the semi-arid backlands, the sertão, into a dust bowl.
The human cost was immense. Across the drought-stricken region, an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 people perished. In the province of Ceará, the epicenter of the disaster, the drought claimed more than half of the population. People died from thirst and starvation but also from waves of epidemic diseases like smallpox, which tore through the weakened and displaced populations. The city of Fortaleza, the provincial capital, saw its population quadruple from roughly 25,000 to over 100,000 as refugees, known as retirantes, flooded in from the desiccated interior. At the peak of the crisis in 1878, the death rate in Fortaleza reached 400 people per day.
