A geological world record
Inside the Hall of the Cataclysm (Sala del Cataclismo) in Spain's Nerja Cave stands the largest speleothem in the world. This geological formation, a massive column created by the fusion of a stalactite and a stalagmite, measures 32 meters high with a base circumference of 18 meters. It has held the Guinness World Record since 1989. The cave system itself, stretching for nearly 5 kilometers, formed around 5 million years ago when rainwater, turned acidic by atmospheric carbon dioxide, began dissolving the region's marble rock in a process called karstification. More recently, during the Holocene epoch, seismic shifts altered the water's pathways, initiating the slow deposition of calcite that built the cave's formations.
The Great Column is a product of this slow, patient process. For hundreds of thousands of years, calcium carbonate-rich water dripped from the ceiling, leaving behind a mineral deposit that grew downwards into a stalactite. Simultaneously, drips hitting the floor below built up a corresponding stalagmite. Eventually, the two met and fused, creating the single, colossal structure seen today. The entire cave is a museum of these calcite formations, known as speleothems, displaying a variety of shapes from delicate "soda straws" to broad, curtain-like "draperies".
A prehistoric weather report
The Great Column is a geological spectacle; it is a high-fidelity archive of prehistoric climate. Scientists use uranium-series dating to analyze the distinct growth layers within the calcite structure. This radiometric technique measures the decay of uranium isotopes into thorium at a known rate, allowing for precise age determination of each layer. Speleothems in the cave have been dated to be over 800,000 years old.
Studies of stable oxygen (δ¹⁸O) and carbon (δ¹³C) isotopes within these dated layers provide a detailed proxy for past environmental conditions. The thickness and isotopic composition of a layer reveal information about the temperature and rainfall at the time of its formation. Thicker, faster-growing layers correspond to warmer, wetter periods with more dripping water. Thinner layers, or growth hiatuses, indicate colder, drier times—such as ice ages—when water flow ceased entirely. One study on a stalactite from the cave provided a detailed climate record for southern Spain for the period between 190,000 and 160,000 years ago. This makes the column an invaluable record of Pleistocene climate cycles, documenting long-term shifts between wet and arid conditions over millennia.
The cave also holds an archaeological record. Skeletal remains and artifacts show human occupation from as early as 25,000 BCE through the Bronze Age. Researchers have also found what may be the oldest works of art ever discovered, paintings of seals dated to between 42,300 and 43,500 years old, which could attribute them to Neanderthals.
