A Cretaceous time capsule
In 2015, paleontologist Lida Xing from the China University of Geosciences was visiting an amber market in Myitkyina, the capital of Myanmar's Kachin State. He spotted a peculiar piece of amber, roughly the size of a dried apricot, that was being sold as a plant inclusion for jewelry. Inside was a 36.73 mm (1.4-inch) appendage covered in delicate feathers. Recognizing its importance, Xing acquired the specimen, formally cataloged as DIP-V-15103 and nicknamed "Eva".
The amber, sourced from mines in the Hukawng Valley, is approximately 99 million years old, dating to the Cenomanian age of the mid-Cretaceous period. Using CT scans and microscopic analysis, Xing's team studied the specimen without damaging it. The scans showed eight vertebrae from the middle or end of a long, thin tail. This anatomical detail was definitive: the vertebrae were not fused into a pygostyle, the rigid structure that supports tail feathers in modern birds. The tail was long and flexible, belonging to a non-avian dinosaur.
The dinosaur was identified as a juvenile coelurosaur, a group of theropods that includes tyrannosaurs and the direct ancestors of birds. Based on the tail's size, the entire animal was likely no larger than a sparrow.
Feathers in three dimensions
The preservation quality of the amber provides a three-dimensional view of dinosaur plumage. Unlike fossils compressed in rock, the amber maintained the fine structure of the feathers. The plumage has a distinct color pattern: chestnut brown on the upper surface and a pale or white underside.
These feathers are more primitive than those of modern birds. They have a weakly defined central shaft, or rachis. The structure indicates that the finer branches of feathers, barbs and barbules, evolved before a strong, central shaft became common. The open, flexible structure made them unsuitable for flight; they were likely used for insulation or display.
The specimen is geologically rare. The Hukawng Valley is one of the world's most important sources of Cretaceous amber, preserving a diverse range of flora and fauna from that period, including insects, lizards, and even other dinosaur fragments. The amber deposits formed in a coastal or near-shore environment, as evidenced by the occasional inclusion of marine life like ammonites alongside terrestrial creatures.
