An Ancient Ecosystem in Resin
In the Hukawng Valley of northern Myanmar's Kachin State, miners extract a remarkable substance: Burmese amber, also called Burmite. This fossilized tree resin dates to the earliest Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous, with uranium-lead dating of volcanic crystals found within the amber-bearing layers providing a maximum age of 98.79 million years. The amber preserves an diverse collection of Cretaceous life, with over 2,500 species of arthropods identified so far. This deposit provides a three-dimensional record of a subtropical forest ecosystem that existed alongside dinosaurs.
The inclusions are not limited to insects and arachnids. Scientists have discovered bird feathers, parts of a feathered dinosaur tail, lizards, frogs, and even marine organisms like ammonites. This mixture of terrestrial and marine life suggests the resin-producing forests grew near a coastline.
Behavior Frozen in Time
The Kachin amber is significant for preserving individual organisms, and their interactions. One of the most dramatic examples is a piece containing a juvenile orb-weaver spider, Geratonephila burmanica, attacking a parasitic wasp, Cascoscelio incassus, that was trapped in its web. This is the only known fossil that shows a spider in the act of predation. The fossil captures a moment of ancient conflict, showing predator-prey dynamics from 100 million years ago.
Other fossils reveal the lifestyles of ancient parasites. Another extinct wasp, Sirenobethylus charybdis, possessed a bizarre, trap-like structure on its abdomen. Researchers believe this "Venus flytrap" appendage was used to temporarily grasp and hold a host insect while the wasp injected its eggs. The host would then be released, carrying the wasp's offspring which would consume it from the inside. This specialized anatomy suggests a greater diversity of hunting strategies among Cretaceous parasitic wasps compared to their modern relatives. Discoveries are not limited to arthropods; in 2024, scientists reported the first partial body fossil of a tapeworm, likely from a marine shark or ray, that somehow ended up in the terrestrial resin.
