An Ice Age surprise in the tropics
Deep inside the Monte Alegre State Park, a series of rock shelters and caves holds a collection of paintings that has reshaped our understanding of human history in the Americas. The most famous of these sites, the Caverna da Pedra Pintada (Painted Rock Cave), contains art and artifacts that date back approximately 11,200 years. This discovery, made by American archaeologist Anna Curtenius Roosevelt in the early 1990s, showed that Paleo-Indian people were present in the Amazon basin at the same time as the Clovis culture in North America and possessed a distinctly different cultural toolkit.
Excavations at Caverna da Pedra Pintada revealed a long and complex history of human occupation. Using radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating methods, Roosevelt's team established that the lowest layers of sediment containing human artifacts were between 11,200 and 10,000 years old. These ancient inhabitants were not big-game hunters like their North American contemporaries. Instead, they were broad-spectrum foragers. The evidence shows they subsisted on plant foods, small animals, and fish from the nearby rivers. This finding contradicted the long-held theory that the Amazon was a "counterfeit paradise" incapable of supporting early human populations and that settlement only occurred much later by migrants from the Andes.
The art itself is a feature of these sites. Hundreds of individual paintings adorn the cave walls, created with pigments made from red and yellow iron oxides (ochre). The images are diverse, depicting human figures—including a woman giving birth—animals, geometric patterns, and negative handprints. These paintings are considered to be among the earliest securely dated examples of rock art in the Americas, showing the symbolic world of the Amazon's first people.
The art and its environment
The rock art is spread across several locations within the park, including the Serra da Lua and Painel do Pilão. At Serra da Lua, the paintings stretch for more than 200 meters along an open-air rock wall. The artists used red and yellow pigments to create their works. The discovery of pigment lumps and paint droplets in the oldest excavated layers of Caverna da Pedra Pintada confirmed that the art was created by the region's earliest inhabitants.
The Paleo-Indian people of Monte Alegre developed a sophisticated stone tool technology. They created triangular, stemmed projectile points from stone, which differ from the fluted points of the North American Clovis tradition. These tools were used for fishing and hunting smaller game. The archaeological record also includes the remains of palms, fruits, and nuts, indicating a deep knowledge of the local forest resources.
The Monte Alegre State Park, established in 2001, protects this important archaeological site. The park covers 3,678 hectares (about 9,090 acres) of rugged hills, valleys, and caves. The main sites, like Caverna da Pedra Pintada and Serra da Lua, are accessible to visitors. The geological formation, known as the Dome of Monte Alegre, creates an environment of savanna-like vegetation within the broader Amazon rainforest. This specific habitat provided the resources that allowed these early communities to thrive. One site, Painel do Pilão, is even considered by some researchers to be the oldest solar observatory in the world, dating back 13,000 years.
