The Triangle's grim ledger
The Michigan Triangle defines an area of Lake Michigan with points at Ludington, Michigan; Benton Harbor, Michigan; and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. For centuries, this stretch of water has been the setting for an unusual number of unexplained disappearances of ships, aircraft, and people. While many incidents can be attributed to the lake's notoriously violent and unpredictable weather, some events defy simple explanation.
One of the most famous cases is the disappearance of Northwest Airlines Flight 2501 on June 23, 1950. The DC-4 aircraft, carrying 55 passengers and 3 crew members, vanished from radar while flying through a storm over the lake. The pilot had requested a descent from 3,500 feet to 2,500 feet shortly before contact was lost. While small bits of debris and human remains were found, the main wreckage of the aircraft has never been located, making it the deadliest commercial airliner accident in Michigan's history.
Maritime history in the triangle is equally strange. In April 1937, Captain George R. Donner of the freighter O.M. McFarland retired to his cabin for rest, instructing his crew to wake him as they neared Port Washington, Wisconsin. When the crew arrived, they found his cabin door locked from the inside. They broke down the door to find the cabin empty. Captain Donner had vanished from the ship in the middle of the lake and was never seen again. Other vanishings include the schooner Thomas Hume in 1891, which disappeared with its seven sailors during a squall, and the Rosa Belle, found capsized in 1921 with its 11-person crew missing.
Deep time and deeper water
Theories attempting to explain the triangle's phenomena range from the geological to the extraordinary. Lake Michigan's north-south orientation allows strong winds to build massive waves, and the lake is known for its dangerous currents and sudden, violent storms. Some researchers also suggest that unusual magnetic fields in the area could interfere with navigation equipment, a claim supported by anecdotal reports of compass malfunctions.
Adding another layer to the mystery, in 2007, underwater archaeologist Mark Holley discovered a peculiar stone structure 40 feet below the surface of Grand Traverse Bay, near the triangle's northern edge. Sonar scans revealed a line of stones arranged in a pattern over a mile long. One of the stones, approximately 3.5 to 4 feet high and 5 feet wide, appears to bear a carving of a mastodon. Mastodons have been extinct in North America for over 10,000 years.
The stones are estimated to have been arranged around 9,000 years ago, a time when the lakebed was a dry, open landscape. This suggests that the area was inhabited by prehistoric people thousands of years before previously thought. While researchers are cautious, and the exact location is kept secret to protect the site; this underwater formation links the modern mystery of the Michigan Triangle to a much deeper, ancient past.
