Engineered Gardens on a Volcanic Island
On the remote landscape of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), ancient farmers developed a unique agricultural solution called manavai. These structures are circular stone enclosures, typically with double walls made of rough volcanic stones filled with rubble. Across the island, around 1,500 of these agricultural features have been recorded. They vary in size, with most enclosing a cultivation area of less than 10 square meters, though some can be found in large groupings of 50 or more.
The primary function of a manavai is to protect cultivated plants from the persistent, desiccating winds that sweep across the island. The walls, which can be up to 1.5 meters high, create a sheltered space that reduces water loss from both the soil and the plants. This design was an adaptive response to the challenging growing conditions on the geologically young island, which has shallow, nutrient-poor soils and subject to erosion. Inside these enclosures, the Rapanui people cultivated staple Polynesian crops, including taro (Colocasia esculenta), yams (Dioscorea alata), sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas), bananas (Musa sp.), and sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum).
Microclimates and Manufactured Soils
The manavai block the wind; they create distinct microclimates. The dark volcanic basalt walls absorb solar radiation during the day and release the heat slowly overnight. This process raises the ambient temperature inside the circle by several degrees, protecting sensitive crops from colder temperatures and extending the growing season. The porous rock walls also reduce evaporation and may capture moisture from the air, creating a more humid environment beneficial for thirsty crops like taro.
Archaeological evidence shows that the Rapanui people actively managed the soil inside these gardens. Research suggests that farmers transported nutrient-rich soil to fill the manavai, improving upon the naturally thin and leached island soil. One study posits that fertile soil, enriched with phosphorus and potassium from the quarrying of volcanic tuff for the famous moai statues, was a valuable resource that was moved to agricultural sites across the island. This practice of soil translocation, combined with the structural protection of the manavai, shows a sophisticated understanding of horticulture and resource management developed to sustain a population in a difficult environment.
