The bear brain's GPS
The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) is not an aimless forager. Research conducted in Sri Lanka's dry zone forests, including Wilpattu National Park, shows these animals possess a sophisticated spatial memory. Rather than wandering randomly in search of food, they move with intent, guided by mental maps of fruit-bearing trees spread across home ranges as large as 30 square kilometers. This cognitive mapping allows them to remember the locations of specific trees and, presumably, the seasonal timing of their fruit production.
This ability provides an evolutionary advantage. While the sloth bear's primary diet consists of termites and ants, seasonal fruits provide a high-energy supplement. Trees like the Palu (Manilkara hexandra) and Weera (Drypetes sepiaria) fruit synchronously in June, creating a temporary bonanza. By remembering the exact locations of these resources, the bears can exploit them efficiently, minimizing energy expenditure. Studies on captive sloth bears have reinforced these findings, demonstrating their ability to solve spatial transposition tasks, which involves tracking non-visible objects, a cognitive skill once thought to be consistently solved only by great apes.. This indicates a high level of object permanence and spatial reasoning.
The Sri Lankan subspecies, Melursus ursinus inornatus, is confined to the island's lowland dry zones. Researchers use non-invasive methods like camera traps and scat analysis to study their diet and behavior. These studies confirm that while insects are the dietary staple, fruit can constitute up to 90% of their food intake during peak fruiting seasons.
An insect-eating specialist
The sloth bear’s body is a collection of specialized tools for myrmecophagy—the consumption of ants and termites. It has long, 8-10 cm curved claws, perfect for ripping into rock-hard termite mounds, not for combat.. Its most peculiar adaptation is its mouth. The bear lacks the two upper middle incisors, creating a gap. Combined with a long, protrusible lower lip and a broad palate, this allows the animal to create a powerful vacuum. After tearing open a nest, it blows away the debris and uses its lips like a vacuum nozzle, noisily sucking up the insects inside. This slurping sound can sometimes be heard from over 300 feet away. To avoid inhaling dust, it can voluntarily close its nostrils.
This specialization dictates much of its behavior. Sloth bears are typically solitary and most active at night or during the cooler hours of twilight (crepuscular). In Wilpattu, camera trap studies revealed distinct activity peaks between 8:30-10:30 PM and 12:00-3:00 AM. They have a powerful sense of smell to locate insect colonies and ripe fruit, but their eyesight and hearing are relatively poor.
Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, the sloth bear population is decreasing due to habitat loss and fragmentation from agriculture and human settlement. These pressures increase the likelihood of human-bear conflicts, making the conservation of large, undisturbed forests like Wilpattu National Park essential for their survival.
