An Upland Agricultural System
In the mountainous uplands of Luang Namtha Province, ethnic groups like the Akha, Khmu, and Lanten practice a form of agriculture that is a massive exercise in genetic conservation. The system, known as swidden agriculture or shifting cultivation, creates a dynamic landscape of cultivated plots, fallow fields, and recovering secondary forests. Farmers clear and burn a small plot of forest, cultivating it for a few years before leaving it to regenerate for five to ten years. This rotational method, often mislabeled as simple "slash-and-burn," is an adaptation to the highland environment.
The primary crop is upland rice (Oryza sativa), but what grows here is not a single, uniform species. The region is a center of biodiversity for rice, particularly glutinous or "sticky" rice, with thousands of traditional varieties recorded across Laos. Farmers in northern Laos cultivate a wide portfolio of these landraces. A single family might plant early-ripening (khao-dor), mid-season (khao-kaang), and late-growing (khao-pii) varieties in the same season. This strategy distributes labor for harvesting and hedges against risks like weather fluctuations or pest outbreaks. Seeds are selected for specific traits: suitability for different soil conditions, slope angles, culinary properties, and even ceremonial uses.
A Reservoir of Genetic Knowledge
This farming practice is in-situ conservation, where genetic resources are maintained in their natural environment. Unlike ex-situ conservation in a conventional seed bank, this method preserves the crop and the vast ethnobotanical knowledge required to grow it. The farmers' selection process is detailed. Rice variety names often have three parts: the word for rice (khao), a root name, and a descriptor. For instance, Khao niaw do describes a glutinous (niaw) and early-maturing (do) rice. Names can also refer to grain color, like black (kam) or red (deng), shape, or even perceived qualities like high yield.
This system also supports a wide range of other crops. Maize, cassava, chili, eggplant, and various millets are often interplanted with the rice, ensuring a diverse food supply. The fallow periods are equally productive, allowing for the regeneration of secondary forests that provide bamboo shoots, tubers, and other wild food plants. Modern agriculture moves toward monocultures; this upland system shows how agrobiodiversity can be maintained. It is a genetic library, constantly adapting and evolving in the fields where it has been cultivated for centuries.
