A voice in the forest
The Bokeo Nature Reserve was established in 2004, covering 1,230 square kilometers of mixed deciduous forest and mountainous terrain. This protected area in northwestern Laos exists because of a primate once thought to be extinct: the western black-crested gibbon (Nomascus concolor). Scientists rediscovered a population here in 1997, prompting conservation efforts that led to the reserve's creation.
These gibbons are sexually dichromatic, meaning males and females have different coloring. Adult males are almost entirely black, while females are a golden or buff color with a patch of black fur on their heads. Infants of both sexes are born a light golden color, turn black as juveniles, and then females return to the golden hue as they reach sexual maturity. They live in small, monogamous family groups, typically consisting of a mated pair and their offspring. Their primary mode of transport is brachiation, swinging through the forest canopy at speeds up to 34 miles per hour.
The reserve also contains other species, including Asian elephants, bears, and tigers, though sightings are rare. The terrain elevation ranges from 500 to 1,500 meters, supporting a diverse ecosystem. The conservation and tourism aspects of the reserve are managed through a project called "The Gibbon Experience," which began with a mandate for sustainable forest management in 1996.
The science of the song
The most distinct feature of the black-crested gibbon is its song. Mated pairs perform elaborate duets, usually in the early morning, that can be heard for miles. These songs serve to define territory and strengthen the pair bond. The duets are complex vocal interactions, typically initiated by the male from a high vantage point.
Each gibbon's song is unique enough that researchers can identify individuals by their calls alone. Studies show that the acoustic individuality is more pronounced among direct neighbors, suggesting that gibbons may actively adjust their songs to distinguish themselves from others in close proximity. The songs are for identification; they are important for mate selection. The quality and complexity of a male's song phrases can show his fitness to potential female mates.
Young male gibbons go through a period of vocal development. They produce female-like "great calls" between the ages of roughly two and seven. After age seven, they begin to produce exclusively male calls, which include staccato notes and multi-modulation phrases. This vocal transition is an important part of their maturation into a breeding adult.
