An Astronomical Clock in Stone
On the highest point in County Meath, a collection of stone mounds has marked the landscape for over five millennia. These are the Loughcrew Cairns, a cemetery of Neolithic passage tombs constructed around 3300 BCE. The most prominent of these, known as Cairn T, is a precise astronomical instrument. Twice a year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the rising sun sends a beam of light down its long stone passage.
This is not a random occurrence. The tomb's builders deliberately oriented the structure to capture the equinox sunrise. As the sun appears, a rectangle of light is projected into the tomb's dark, cruciform chamber. The beam of light moves across the face of a large, carved stone at the back of the chamber, known as the backstone. The light illuminates a series of carved petroglyphs—including concentric circles, zig-zags, and floral-like patterns—revealing them in sequence. This annual event shows that the Neolithic farmers who built the tomb possessed a clear understanding of the sun's movements.
Reading the Symbols
The collection of engravings on the backstone of Cairn T is one of the most significant examples of Neolithic art in Ireland. The symbols are abstract, and their exact meanings are not fully understood, but the equinox alignment gives them context. The beam of light is a pointer, showing specific carvings as it tracks across the stone. Researchers have interpreted these illuminated symbols as a kind of solar calendar or map.
The entire complex at Loughcrew, known in Irish as Sliabh na Caillí (The Hill of the Witch), contains about 30 recorded monuments. Cairn T, which measures about 35 meters (115 feet) in diameter, is the centerpiece. Excavations at the site have found cremated human remains, indicating the cairns' primary function as communal burial places. The combination of funerary purpose and precise astronomical alignment shows these monuments were central to the ritual and spiritual life of the society that built them. The alignment would have allowed them to mark the changing seasons, a critical function for an early agricultural community.
