An archive in the mud
Situated at an altitude over 3,200 meters on the Tibetan Plateau, Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland body of water. Its basin is a sensitive transition zone, influenced by the interplay of the East Asian monsoon and the mid-latitude Westerlies. This unique location makes the lake an recorder of regional climate history. For decades, scientists have drilled deep into the lakebed, extracting sediment cores that are a timeline of environmental change.
These long tubes of mud contain layers of accumulated sediment, trapping pollen, minerals, and chemical isotopes. By analyzing these proxies, researchers can reconstruct past climate conditions with detail. One multi-proxy analysis of a sediment core documented regional climatic changes over the last 18,000 years. This record shows a very cold and dry period before 16,900 years ago, followed by a warm and wet period that began around 14,100 years ago and peaked at 6,500 years ago. The data captures abrupt, short-term climate oscillations, including the Younger Dryas cooling event. The mineral composition of the cores also shows; high quartz content indicates cold, dry periods with stronger wind-blown dust deposition, while the presence of aragonite points to warmer, wetter conditions with higher lake levels. These detailed records allow scientists to track the intensity and variability of the East Asian monsoon over millennia.
Life in a harsh environment
The lake's hydrological isolation, which began when tectonic movements severed its connection to the Yellow River some 130,000 years ago, has created a unique environment. The water is both saline and alkaline, with a salinity of around 14 parts per thousand and a pH up to 9.2. Only a few species can survive these demanding conditions. The dominant fish, and the only one commercially harvested, is the endemic Qinghai naked carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii).
This species has developed specific adaptations to its environment. As its name suggests, it lacks most scales, which is a common trait among fish in the Schizothoracinae subfamily. The naked carp is a slow-growing fish, taking seven to ten years to reach reproductive maturity. Each year, from April to July, the adult carp undertake a strenuous migration from the saline lake into the few remaining freshwater rivers to spawn, seeking out sandy gravel beds for their nests. This migration requires a deep physiological shift. When transitioning from freshwater back to the saline lake, the carp's metabolism slows, oxygen consumption falls, and its kidneys drastically reduce urine flow to conserve water. This ability to adjust its internal chemistry allows it to thrive in two vastly different aquatic environments. Beyond the naked carp, the lake's native fish fauna includes just four species of Triplophysa loaches.
