A Library of Mud
Lake Poukawa’s unassuming waters conceal a detailed archive of New Zealand’s environmental history. For millennia, sediment has settled on the lakebed, creating a layered record of the surrounding ecosystem. Scientists drill into these deposits, extracting cores that are chronological records. Each layer reveals the plants, animals, and environmental conditions of a specific time.
One of the most important chronological markers within the sediment is a layer of pumice from the Taupō volcanic eruption, dated to around 1,800 years ago. Below this volcanic bookmark, the pollen record shows a stable, dense podocarp-hardwood forest dominating the region for thousands of years. The consistent pollen signature and a near-total absence of charcoal suggest a world without human influence. The lake itself was part of a much larger wetland system, a habitat for a diverse range of birds. The remains of over 40 bird species have been identified from the lake's deposits, showing a thriving pre-human ecosystem.
The mud also records the bones of the creatures that lived and died here. The paleontological sites around the lake are extraordinarily rich, with over 13,400 waterfowl bones recovered since excavations began in the 1950s. These deposits span at least 7,000 years, providing a long-term history of the region's avifauna.
Fire, Fern, and Disappearance
The story told by the sediment cores changes abruptly. Well above the Taupō pumice layer, scientists observe a dramatic shift. Pollen from tall forest trees plummets. Simultaneously, charcoal fragments appear in great numbers for the first time, and the pollen of bracken fern (Pteridium esculentum) spikes. This change indicates widespread deforestation by fire, beginning around 1,000 years ago. This environmental shift coincides with the accepted window for the arrival of Polynesian settlers (Māori) in Hawke's Bay, between 1250 and 1300 CE.
The consequences for the local fauna were catastrophic and swift. The bone record shows the rapid disappearance of numerous bird species. All nine species of moa, giant flightless birds, were hunted to extinction across New Zealand in less than 200 years. At Poukawa, bones from species like Pachyornis mappini vanish from the record. The moa were not alone. The ecosystem collapse led to the loss of the New Zealand swan (Cygnus sumnerensis), the New Zealand pelican (Pelecanus novaezealandiae), Finsch's duck (Chenonetta finschi), and the giant musk duck (Biziura delautouri). The disappearance of these species from the upper layers of the lakebed mud shows the speed at which a new apex predator can reshape an isolated ecosystem.
