An exercise in coastal dynamics
The Kyaikkami Yele Pagoda, also called the Kyaik-kami Ye Le Paya, is a Buddhist shrine built on a natural rock reef in the Gulf of Martaban. A long causeway connects the temple complex to the shore, but parts of this walkway become submerged during high tide. The structure's location exposes it to the full force of one of the most dynamic tidal environments in the world. The Gulf of Martaban has a tide-dominated coastline, with tidal ranges measuring between 4 and 7 meters (13 to 23 feet).
The gulf's distinctive funnel shape amplifies the tidal effects, creating powerful currents and a tidal bore phenomenon further up the estuary. For the pagoda's foundation to have survived for centuries, its builders needed a functional understanding of these hydrodynamic forces. The structure must withstand constant saltwater immersion, wave impacts, and the pressure changes associated with a large tidal range. This requires careful site selection on the most stable part of the reef and construction techniques that could resist erosion and the corrosive marine environment. The builders effectively applied principles of coastal engineering long before the formal establishment of the discipline.
