A Society Built on the Mother's Line
In the hills of Meghalaya, the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia peoples practice a matrilineal system, a societal structure rare in the world. For the Khasi, lineage is traced and clan identity is passed down through the mother. Children take their mother's surname, and ancestral property is inherited by the youngest daughter, known as the Ka Khadduh. She becomes the custodian of the family home and is responsible for caring for her aging parents. This social framework is not matriarchal—men hold significant authority in politics and public life—but it places women at the center of family, lineage, and property.
The Khasi language is another unique feature. It belongs to the Austroasiatic language family, making it a linguistic island related to languages in Southeast Asia, like Khmer, but not to the surrounding Indo-Aryan or Tibeto-Burman languages of India. This cultural and linguistic distinction points to a unique history, which is now being explored through genetics. The enduring matrilineal system provides a remarkable natural experiment for studying how social customs can shape a population's genetic makeup over millennia.
Culture Written in DNA
Because mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is passed down almost exclusively from mother to child, it shows a matrilineal society's genetic history. Studies of Khasi populations reveal a direct correlation between their social structure and their genetic patterns. Genetic analyses have identified the Y-chromosomal haplogroup O2a1-M95 as a marker of Austroasiatic populations, originating in southern China around 20,000–40,000 years ago. Studies estimate that between 30% and 70% of Khasi men carry this genetic marker.
A 2007 study analyzed the mtDNA of 444 individuals from eight Khasi subgroups and found 37 distinct haplogroups. This research suggests that Northeast India was a corridor for population movements between South and Southeast Asia. The Khasi people's genetic makeup shows a continuity between these two regions. While their language connects them to Southeast Asia, their genes reveal a complex history of mixing with neighboring groups. More recent whole-genome studies confirm that Khasi populations have mixed South and Southeast Asian ancestry, showing significant genetic links to populations in the Indo-Gangetic plains. This research overturns older theories that Northeast India acted as a genetic barrier. Instead, the region has been a dynamic region for thousands of years.
