Deep inside the Khao Luang Cave in Phetchaburi, 180 golden Buddha statues rest among limestone stalactites. The cave, located about 90 feet below ground, has been a sacred site for centuries and was a favored meditation spot for King Rama IV. Sunlight streams through openings in the ceiling, illuminating the chambers and creating an atmosphere. This unique environment, with its high humidity, stable temperature, and low nutrient levels, is a site for microbial evolution.
Caves are considered underexplored ecosystems, and their distinct conditions force microorganisms into intense competition for resources. This competition drives the evolution of chemical defenses, many of which are potent bioactive compounds. Scientists have turned their attention to these isolated environments in the search for new weapons against drug-resistant bacteria, or "superbugs." Bioprospecting in a sacred cave
The phylum Actinobacteria is a group of bacteria famous for producing chemical compounds with medical applications. In fact, about two-thirds of all known antibiotics were originally derived from this group, particularly from the genus Streptomyces. These bacteria are abundant in soil and are responsible for the earthy smell after rain, a scent produced by a compound they make called geosmin.
Researchers exploring caves in Thailand have identified a significant diversity of actinomycetes. Studies in various cave systems have isolated novel strains capable of producing compounds that inhibit the growth of dangerous pathogens. While specific research publications detailing antibiotic discovery directly from Khao Luang Cave are part of broader regional studies, the cave environment is the habitat where such discoveries are made. The process involves collecting samples from cave walls and soil, isolating different bacterial strains in a lab, and then testing the chemical compounds they produce against panels of drug-resistant microbes. This bioprospecting in unique locations like Khao Luang is important for the fight against the growing antibiotic-resistance crisis.
