The cradle of cultivated tulips
The mountains of Central Asia are the genetic origin point for the tulips that fill gardens worldwide. Specifically, the Karatau State Nature Reserve in southern Kazakhstan protects wild populations of tulip species that are the direct ancestors of thousands of cultivated varieties. Genomic studies indicate that the domestication of these flowers began in this region approximately 1,000 years ago. Early horticulturalists selected wild tulips for specific traits, and over centuries of breeding, transformed the flower. One of the most significant changes was in size; selective breeding for larger blooms resulted in a 400% increase in petal surface area compared to the wild progenitors.
The Karatau reserve is a critical center for tulip biodiversity, harboring important ancestral species like Tulipa greigii and Tulipa kaufmanniana. T. greigii, sometimes called the "king of tulips," is known for its large, brilliant red flowers and distinctive mottled or striped leaves. T. kaufmanniana, or the "water-lily tulip," is a smaller species whose petals open wide in the sun, resembling a water lily. These two species alone are the ancestors of more than 400 modern tulip cultivars. Their genes form the foundation of a global multi-billion dollar bulb industry, a story that began with small, wild flowers on a remote Kazakhstani hillside.
