A cradle for wild tulips
Aksu-Zhabagly is the oldest state nature reserve in Central Asia, established on July 14, 1926. Located in the western Tian Shan mountains, the reserve protects a vast area of 131,934 hectares. The region is a center for tulip diversity and is considered an origin point for the genus. The reserve contains at least 44 rare plant species listed in Kazakhstan's red data book, including several types of wild tulips.
Two of the most significant species surveyed here are Tulipa greigii and Tulipa kaufmanniana. T. greigii is often called the "King of Tulips," possessing some of the largest flowers in the genus, with petals reaching up to 15 centimeters long. T. kaufmanniana is known for its multi-colored petals and early flowering. These wild species are important; they are the genetic ancestors of approximately 75% of all modern cultivated tulip varieties. Their genetic diversity could help develop new cultivars with resistance to disease and changing climate conditions.
An ecological mismatch
Long-term surveys of wild tulip populations within Aksu-Zhabagly show a consistent decline of about 3% per year. Scientific analysis connects this drop to a specific climate change-induced phenomenon: an ecological timing mismatch. Rising spring temperatures are causing the mountain snowpack to melt earlier in the season. This premature snowmelt signals the tulips to begin their growth cycle and send up shoots and flowers.
The atmosphere has not warmed at the same rate as the ground surface. This means the risk of sudden, late-spring frosts persists even though the snow is gone. The tulips, now fully exposed without a protective snow cover, are highly vulnerable. A single frost event can destroy the flowers for an entire season, preventing pollination and seed production. This repeated reproductive failure, year after year, leads to a gradual but steady decline in the overall population. This pattern is not isolated; climate modeling predicts that by 2050, many tulip species across Central Asia will lose significant portions of their suitable habitat, with most surviving only at higher altitudes. Other pressures, including livestock overgrazing and illegal collection, add to the threats facing these wild populations.
