A botanical island in the sky
In the Tian Shan mountains of Uzbekistan, a unique population of fir trees forms a forest out of time. This is the Chatkal silver fir, known to science as Abies semenovii. It is a disjunct population, a botanical island separated by about 1,500 kilometers from its closest relative, the main Siberian fir (Abies sibirica). These trees exist only in specific microclimates within the Ugam-Chatkal National Park, typically on cooler, north-facing slopes at elevations between 1,300 and 2,850 meters.
The tree itself can grow to 40 meters tall with a trunk up to one meter in diameter. Its bark is smooth and grey on young trees, breaking into plates as it matures. Taxonomists debate its classification; some consider it a distinct species, while others classify it as a subspecies, Abies sibirica subsp. semenovii. Regardless of its official name, genetic studies confirm its isolation. Analysis of its nuclear and cytoplasmic DNA reveals a long-term population decline and very low genetic variation, consistent with a small group of organisms surviving in a restricted refuge for a very long time. This population forms forests with other regional trees like the Schrenk's spruce (Picea schrenkiana) and species of maple and rowan.
A record of deep time
The Chatkal fir is considered a relict of Tertiary period mesophyte forests—wetter, more temperate forests that were widespread millions of years ago. The collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which began the uplift of the Himalayas around 40 to 50 million years ago, dramatically altered Asia's climate, leading to widespread aridification. This fir population survived by retreating into the Tian Shan mountains, which acted as a glacial refugium. During the Pleistocene ice ages, these mountain valleys provided a stable, moist habitat while surrounding lowlands became inhospitable.
This isolation makes the Chatkal fir a living link to a pre-glacial world. Its genetic makeup shows the diversity that existed before ice ages repeatedly caused species' ranges to contract and expand. The very existence of this forest is evidence of the stability of its high-altitude mountain ecosystem. The species name, semenovii, honors Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, the Russian geographer who was the first European to systematically explore and describe the Tian Shan mountain range in 1857.
