A City on the Oxus
At Kampirtepa, an archaeological site on the banks of the Amu Darya river in southern Uzbekistan, skeletons from the Kushan Empire period (roughly 1st to 4th centuries CE) present a striking modification. Certain individuals had their teeth, specifically the canines and incisors, deliberately filed into sharp points. This practice, a form of intentional dental modification, was not widespread among the general population buried at the site, suggesting it signified a special status for a select few.
The city itself was a significant port on the ancient Oxus River, a center of cultures and trade. First established in the 4th century BCE, possibly as Alexandria on the Oxus by Alexander the Great's armies, it saw continuous occupation through the Greco-Bactrian and Kushan periods. Archaeologists have uncovered a citadel, residential areas, and evidence of multiple religions coexisting, including Zoroastrianism and Buddhism. The skeletons with modified teeth were found within this cosmopolitan context, showing questions about who they were and what role they played in Kushan society. The modification itself, requiring skill and endurance, indicates a culturally significant rite of passage or group identity.
An Isotopic Investigation
To understand more about these individuals, scientists turned to stable isotope analysis of their bones and teeth. This technique measures the ratios of different stable isotopes—non-radioactive forms of elements—that accumulate in body tissues from food and water. Carbon-13 (¹³C) and nitrogen-15 (¹⁵N) ratios reveal long-term dietary patterns.
Carbon isotope ratios can distinguish between diets based on C3 plants (like wheat, rice, and vegetables) and C4 plants (like millet and maize). Nitrogen isotopes indicate an organism's trophic level, with higher values suggesting a greater consumption of animal protein. When researchers analyzed the remains from Kampirtepa, the results showed the individuals with pointed teeth had a significantly different isotopic signature compared to the rest of the population.
Their diet was based on different staple foods, setting them apart from their neighbors. This dietary distinction is the primary evidence for the theory that they may have belonged to a priestly caste. Such a group might have consumed specific ritual foods or abstained from common staples as a marker of their religious and social standing. While the exact foods are still under investigation, the isotopic data shows a chemical record of a group that lived and ate differently from everyone else in the city.
