The anatomy of a leap
In the vast, arid landscapes of the Gobi Desert, jerboas execute a highly specialized form of bipedal locomotion. Species like the Gobi jerboa (Allactaga bullata) and the long-eared jerboa (Euchoreutes naso) possess an anatomy finely tuned for hopping in open desert environments. Their most striking feature is their disproportionate limbs; the hind legs are often up to four times longer than the front legs. This elongation provides the necessary leverage for their powerful jumps, which can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) when escaping a predator.
An important adaptation lies in their feet. The three central metatarsal bones in the hind feet are fused into a single, robust structure called a cannon bone. This fusion, similar to the anatomy of a horse, provides immense strength to withstand the high-impact forces of landing. Lighter jerboa species have separate metatarsals, while larger species evolved this fusion to better reinforce their limbs against higher loads. The biomechanics of their jump are more for maneuverability than for energy efficiency. Unlike kangaroos, which store and reuse significant elastic energy in their tendons, jerboas recover only about 4.4% of this energy. This suggests their locomotion evolved for rapid, unpredictable acceleration to evade predators rather than for sustained, long-distance travel.
