The River's Gift of Land
The Irrawaddy (or Ayeyarwady) River delivers one of the largest sediment loads of any river on Earth, carrying an estimated 364 million tons of suspended sediment to the Andaman Sea each year. This massive quantity of silt, sand, and clay originates from the erosion of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen. The river's two main sources, the Nmai and Mali rivers, rise from glaciers in the far north of Myanmar and carry eroded rock southward. The Chindwin River, a major tributary, contributes a large portion of the total sediment load as it erodes the softer rocks of the Myanmar Central Basin.
This constant supply of sediment has built a vast, low-lying delta covering an area of over 35,000 square kilometers. The fertile alluvial soil, continuously replenished by the river's deposits, makes the Irrawaddy Delta one of the world's most important rice-producing regions. Historically, this sediment deposition has caused the delta's coastline to advance into the sea at a rate of about 50 meters per year. This process, called progradation, has built thousands of square kilometers of new land over the centuries, though recent data suggests this expansion has slowed or even reversed in some areas due to a complex balance of sediment deposition, land subsidence, and sea-level rise. The delta itself is geologically young, with the oldest beach ridges dating back only about 4,600 years.
