A Fortress Built on Science
Constructed between 1794 and 1796, Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon represents the scientific and military principles of Korea's Joseon Dynasty. The 5.74-kilometer-long wall was a project of King Jeongjo, designed by the influential scholar Jeong Yak-yong, a proponent of "Silhak," or practical learning. This philosophy drove the integration of Korean, Chinese, and even European military architectural concepts, creating a fortress that was advanced for its time. The design combined residential and defensive features, a departure from typical fortresses in neighboring China and Japan which often served singular purposes.
The fortress wall, standing between 4 and 6 meters high, originally had 48 distinct defensive elements. These included four main gates at the cardinal directions, command posts, crossbow platforms, and observation towers. One of the innovations was the extensive use of brick, a material promoted by Silhak scholars due to timber shortages. This choice also allowed for the construction of novel structures like the gongsimdon, hollow watchtowers that served as observation posts and sheltered firing positions. This structure was a first for Korean fortress architecture. The entire construction took an estimated 700,000 man-hours. A detailed 10-volume report, the "Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe," published in 1801, documented every aspect of the construction, from blueprints to budgets, allowing for its accurate restoration after damage during the Korean War.
Celestial Navigation in Stone
The military design of Hwaseong has physical defenses. The placement of specific structures reveals a sophisticated use of astronomy for strategic purposes. Watchtowers and pavilions, such as the Seobukgangnu (Northwestern Pavilion), were positioned to align with celestial bodies. This allowed sentinels and commanders to determine directions and tell time at night long before the widespread use of personal compasses. By observing the movement of constellations around the pole star, soldiers could maintain their bearings and coordinate movements in darkness.
This celestial alignment was part of a larger, scientifically-informed design philosophy. The fortress was built to harmonize with the natural topography, covering both flat and hilly terrain for maximum defensive advantage. Key structures served multiple roles; the Dongbukgangnu (Northeastern Angle Tower), also known as Banghwasuryujeong, was both a scenic pavilion for feasts and a heavily guarded command post. This fusion of aesthetics, military function, and practical science reflects the Silhak ideals that shaped its creation. The fortress records 18th-century advancements in Korean engineering, urban planning, and military strategy.
