A Fortress from a Blueprint
Hwaseong Fortress is an 18th-century military structure planned with scientific precision. The construction, which took place between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, was guided by principles of the Silhak, or "Practical Learning," movement. This school of thought promoted the use of science and industry for societal development. The fortress was designed by the scholar Jeong Yak-yong, who consulted both Eastern and Western military and scientific texts.
The entire project is documented in a ten-volume report called the Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe, published in 1801. This comprehensive manual contains everything from blueprints and engineering methods to material lists, budgets, and worker timetables. It details the dimensions for every structure, the cost of materials, and even the wages paid to the 700,000 mobilized workers. This level of detailed documentation was precise that it allowed for accurate restoration of the fortress after it sustained damage during the Korean War. The existence of this manual was the reason for UNESCO's designation of the fortress as a World Heritage site in 1997.
Engineering an 18th-Century Superstructure
The construction of Hwaseong Fortress, originally projected to take ten years, was completed in just under 33 months. This efficiency was a direct result of new technologies developed by Jeong Yak-yong. He invented a crane-like device called the Geojunggi, which used a system of pulleys to allow a single worker to lift stones weighing up to 240 kilograms. The design was based on principles found in texts on Western technology. Other new machines included the Nokro, a winch for lifting heavy objects, and specialized carts for transporting materials.
The fortress wall itself combines materials and design. It stretches for 5.74 kilometers and stands between four and six meters high. The wall combines traditional granite and earth with fired bricks (byeokdol), a material that better resisted cannon fire by localizing damage. Along the wall are 48 defensive facilities, including command posts, observation towers, firearm bastions, and secret gates. One innovation was the Gongsimdon, a hollow brick watchtower with openings for firing cannons and other weapons, a feature not seen in Korea before. The placement of every gate, turret, and arrow-launching platform was calculated for defensive effectiveness, creating overlapping fields of fire.
