A hill with a secret
Gunung Padang is the largest megalithic site in Southeast Asia, located on an extinct volcano in West Java. The visible part of the site is a series of five stone terraces built from thousands of rectangular columns of volcanic andesite rock. To reach the summit, visitors must climb a central stone staircase of 370 steps, which ascends about 95 meters at a steep 45-degree angle. For the local Sundanese people, the site is sacred, a place they believe was built in a single night by a mythical king.
In 2011, a research team led by geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja began a multidisciplinary study using methods like ground-penetrating radar, seismic tomography, and core drilling. Their results suggested that the hill is not a natural formation but a complex, multi-layered artificial pyramid. Geophysical surveys indicated the hidden chambers and cavities deep within the structure, approximately 20-30 meters below the surface. Based on these findings, the researchers proposed a hypothesis: Gunung Padang was built in successive phases, with the oldest layers dating back to the last Ice Age.
A debate written in carbon
The biggest claim from the research team came from radiocarbon dating. They analyzed organic soil material extracted from deep within drill cores, taken from layers far below the visible terraces. The dates returned were unprecedented, suggesting initial construction phases between 9,500 and 28,000 years ago. If correct, this would make Gunung Padang far older than Göbekli Tepe in Turkey (around 11,000 years old) and change the timeline of advanced human construction. The team asserted that these dates prove an unknown, advanced civilization existed during the Paleolithic era.
This conclusion, however, ignited a fierce scientific debate. Many archaeologists and geologists argue that the hill is a natural volcanic neck, and the columnar stones are from a common geological process called columnar jointing. The core of the criticism focuses on the radiocarbon dating itself. Opponents state that dating soil samples without associated human artifacts does not prove human construction. The dated carbon could be from natural soil formation over millennia, not from human activity. The controversy peaked in March 2024, when the journal Archaeological Prospection retracted the original paper, citing a "major error" in the interpretation of the radiocarbon dating. The debate continues, leaving Gunung Padang's true age and origin an unresolved scientific question.
