The Underwater Great Wall
Southern China's Guangxi province is defined by its karst topography—a landscape of limestone towers, sinkholes, and caves sculpted by water over millions of years. Below the surface, these features connect into vast, flooded networks. In Du'an county, cave divers have described the systems as an "underwater Himalaya," with passages so large and deep they rival the famous Wakulla Springs in Florida. Exploration here is a recent phenomenon. After initial explorations by a British team in the late 1980s, the area was largely forgotten by the international caving community for three decades.
Renewed interest began around 2011, led by French cave explorer Pierre-Eric Deseigne. His expeditions to springs like Daxing revealed the immense scale of the systems. One dive at Daxing spring reached a depth of 121 meters. The potential for exploration is enormous, with water levels suggesting some passages could reach depths of 180 to 200 meters, a challenging environment requiring helium-based gas mixtures for divers. These flooded conduits are geological features; they are active underground rivers, important components of the region's hydrology. Multi-national teams from Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) have worked to map these systems, such as San Men Hai in the Fengshan Karst National Geo-Park, gathering data to support a UNESCO World Heritage site designation.
A Laboratory for Evolution
The dark conditions of Guangxi's underwater caves create unique ecosystems, promoting the evolution of highly adapted creatures known as troglobionts. Feihu Dong, a cave system in the region, has been is a biodiversity hotspot, with 62 species cataloged, 27 of which are considered cave-obligate. These include highly troglomorphic species showing extreme adaptations to cave life like the blind ground beetle Huoyanodytes tujiaphilus and the blind fish Triplophysa xiangxiensis.
Discoveries of new species are ongoing. The Sinocyclocheilus genus, a group of golden-line fish, is particularly diverse here, with 81 recognized species. A recently discovered species, S. xingrenensis, has large eyes but no scales, suggesting it is still in the process of adapting to a fully subterranean existence. Another new species, a loach named Paranemachilus liui, was found in 2023. It measures about 6.3 centimeters and has distinctive yellowish-brown coloring and bright yellow fins. In a different cave system, researchers found Triplophysa baishuijiangensis, a fish with a semi-transparent body that reveals its internal organs. These animals navigate and find food in total darkness using adaptations like whisker-like barbels. The exploration of these caves is a scientific project, with teams of aquatic biologists conducting research on the rare fish and shrimp that inhabit these unique environments.
