A Meal 900,000 Years in the Making
In the Sierra de Atapuerca mountains of northern Spain, a limestone cave called Gran Dolina holds a dark secret from the Early Pleistocene. Within a specific layer of earth, known as TD6, archaeologists uncovered a scene of ancient violence. This layer, now dated to around 900,000 years ago, contains the fossilized remains of Homo antecessor, one of the earliest known human species in Europe. Mixed among the bones of bison, deer, and wild sheep are the remains of at least 11 of their own kind, most of them children or adolescents.
The human bones are not intact. They are scarred with the same tell-tale marks of butchery seen on the animal remains. Stone tools left fine, linear cut marks where flesh was sliced away. Percussion marks, dents and impact fractures show where long bones were smashed open to extract the marrow. The skulls were systematically broken apart to access the brain. The evidence is clear and direct: Homo antecessor processed and ate other humans in the same way they prepared a deer. This practice, termed gastronomic cannibalism, was not an act of starvation or a complex ritual; it appears to have been a regular part of their diet. The human parts were discarded alongside other food scraps, treated as another resource.
The Cannibal's Menu
The individuals from Gran Dolina were systematically dismembered and defleshed. Even a vertebra from a child, aged between two and four years old, has precise incisions indicating decapitation. The goal was the complete use of the body for food. This makes Gran Dolina the oldest well-documented case of cannibalism in human history.
Analysis of the remains suggests this was a case of exocannibalism—eating individuals from outside one's own social group. The leading theory is that cannibalism was a strategy for both nutrition and competition. In a demanding Pleistocene environment with fluctuating food resources, other humans were a viable food source. Killing and eating rivals from neighboring territories would have eliminated competition for local resources. Some researchers, using Optimal Foraging Theory, argue that humans were a "high-ranked" prey. Compared to other animals, rival humans may have been easier to encounter and kill, providing a good caloric return for a relatively low-energy cost. This behavior was evidently a successful adaptation, integrated into their way of life for survival.
