A question of time
In the hills of Cantabria, Spain, the Cueva de El Castillo contains a gallery of Paleolithic art. For decades, its red-ochre hand stencils and animal figures were thought to be the work of early modern humans. But a 2012 study changed what we know about this art and its potential creators. The study, led by archaeologist Alistair Pike, did not use traditional radiocarbon dating, which requires organic material. Instead, the team employed Uranium-Thorium (U-Th) dating. This method analyzes the radioactive decay of uranium into thorium within the thin calcite crusts that have formed over the paintings. By dating these mineral deposits, scientists can establish a minimum age for the artwork underneath.
The results were unexpected. A simple red disk on a section called the "Panel of Hands" was found to be at least 40,800 years old. Nearby, a hand stencil proved to be older than 37,300 years. These dates make the art at El Castillo the oldest known cave painting in Europe, predating the famous images at Chauvet Cave in France by several thousand years. This ancient origin for the art immediately raised a complex question: if the paintings are this old, were Homo sapiens the artists?
The Neanderthal hypothesis
The minimum age of 40,800 years for the red disk places it at a point in European prehistory. Current evidence suggests that anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) first arrived in northern Spain around 41,500 years ago. Before that, the sole inhabitants of the region were Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis). The dates from El Castillo are so close to this arrival time that they open up the possibility that Neanderthals created the art. If a painting was made even a few centuries before its 40,800-year-old calcite crust formed, it would fall squarely within the era of Neanderthal dominance.
This idea challenges the long-held view of Neanderthals as a species incapable of symbolic thought and artistic expression. For many years, these cognitive abilities were considered exclusive to modern humans. However, evidence suggests more of Neanderthal capabilities. Discoveries at other sites show Neanderthals used pigments, wore ornaments made from shells and eagle talons, and may have engaged in ritualistic behavior. The El Castillo paintings could be the most direct evidence yet of Neanderthal artistry. The debate continues, as the dating doesn't definitively exclude early modern humans. Still, the findings from this Cantabrian cave force a re-evaluation of who Europe's first artists truly were.
