A calendar of wood and earth
For millennia, the Goseck Circle was invisible, its structure hidden beneath a wheat field in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 1991, an aerial survey revealed the site as a distinct circular pattern in the crops, a phenomenon caused by drought. This discovery led to excavations beginning in 2002, which uncovered one of the oldest and best-preserved examples of about 250 similar Neolithic ring ditches found across Central Europe. Radiocarbon dating shows the structure was built around 4,900 B.C.E. and used for approximately 200 years.
The site consists of a circular ditch 75 meters (246 feet) in diameter, with an earthen rampart built from the excavated soil. Inside the ditch stood two concentric wooden palisades with three main gates facing north, southeast, and southwest. The people who built it belonged to the Stroke-ornamented ware culture, named for the style of their pottery. The reconstruction on the original site, which opened in 2005, used 1,675 oak posts, each about 2.5 meters high, to recreate the palisades.
Celestial alignments and ritual purpose
The Goseck Circle is the oldest known structure providing evidence of systematic astronomical observation. The southeast and southwest gates are precisely aligned with the sunrise and sunset on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. This allowed its Neolithic builders to mark a specific, predictable point in the solar cycle, an ability useful for an early agricultural society. Other gaps in the palisades appear to align with the summer solstice.
The circle was a calendar. Excavations have revealed signs of a dual purpose as a cult or ritual center. Archaeologists found animal bones, bovine skulls, and human remains within the enclosure. Near the southeastern gate, a headless skeleton was discovered, suggesting either a specific burial custom or human sacrifice. The presence of ritual fires further indicates that the circle was a place for ceremonies and communal gatherings tied to the celestial events it tracked.
