The coast of death
Cape Finisterre juts into the turbulent North Atlantic, forming the westernmost edge of Galicia's aptly named Costa da Morte—the "Coast of Death." For centuries, this name referred to the countless ships lost to its rocky shores and violent storms. Today, scientific observation reveals another, parallel tragedy: the mass mortality of seabirds. These events, known as "wrecks," occur when prolonged, intense Atlantic storms overwhelm thousands of birds, leaving them to wash ashore.
The cape's geography creates a natural funnel. Pelagic seabirds—those that spend most of their lives on the open ocean—are driven towards the coast by relentless westerly winds. After days of struggling against the storm, they cannot feed, and their feathers lose their waterproofing. Exhausted and starving, they succumb to hypothermia and drown. Post-mortem examinations of birds wrecked along this coast consistently confirm starvation as the primary cause of death.
Monitoring programs, some organized by the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife), systematically survey the beaches to count the dead. These efforts show that the number of carcasses found is only a fraction of the total mortality, with estimates suggesting that only 20% of birds that die at sea are ever washed ashore.
A storm's devastating toll
The scale of these wrecks can be immense. During particularly severe winters, tens of thousands of birds can perish along the Atlantic coasts of Spain, Portugal, and France. A single intense winter storm system can result in thousands of deaths in just a few weeks. Mass mortality events are becoming more frequent and severe, a trend that scientists connect to climate change, which increases the intensity of ocean storms.
The victims are primarily species that winter in the North Atlantic. Leg-ringing studies have traced many of the dead Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) back to breeding colonies in Scotland and the remote islands of Sule Skerry and the Shiant Islands. Besides puffins, other commonly wrecked species include Razorbills (Alca torda), Common Guillemots (Uria aalge), Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus), and Black-legged Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla).
While these wrecks have always occurred, their increasing frequency threatens the resilience of already vulnerable seabird populations. These species face mounting pressures from unsustainable fishing practices, pollution, and climate-driven changes in the availability of their prey. The beaches of Cape Finisterre are an indicator of the health of the broader North Atlantic marine ecosystem.
