An evolutionary paradox
Eulophia zollingeri is a plant caught between two worlds. It belongs to the orchid family, a group known for its photosynthetic members, yet it has almost entirely abandoned this method of producing food. This terrestrial orchid is a mycoheterotroph, meaning it derives its nutrients not from sunlight, but by stealing them from fungi in the soil. Specifically, it has a highly specialized relationship with fungi from the family Psathyrellaceae. These fungi are saprotrophic, meaning they decompose rotting wood. The orchid taps into the fungal network, siphoning off the carbon the fungus liberates from the decaying timber.
The hook for this orchid's story is its "in-between" status. While it is primarily leafless, some variants do produce leafy shoots, a relic of their photosynthetic past. Even in leafless forms, the plant is not a complete parasite. Isotopic analysis and the presence of chlorophyll show that the orchid can photosynthesize through its stems and capsules, especially during the fruiting stage. This makes Eulophia zollingeri a partial mycoheterotroph, a living model for the evolutionary transition from a self-sufficient plant to a full-time parasite. It retains the machinery for photosynthesis but relies mostly on its fungal host.
The physical appearance of the plant tells the story of its strange lifestyle. Its main body is a fleshy, horizontal rhizome that can be 7-16 cm long. From this, a fleshy stalk emerges, growing up to 900 mm tall. This stalk can be purplish-red to brownish-yellow and bears between six and forty reddish-brown flowers. The flowers, which are 50-60 mm wide, have a sharp, sometimes unpleasant, scent and a distinctive dark red and yellow labellum, or lip.
Forest floor deception
The life of Eulophia zollingeri is tied to the health of the forest floor. It thrives in rainforests and seasonal evergreen forests where there is plenty of rotting wood to sustain its fungal partner. The orchid's distribution is wide, spanning from Sri Lanka and India across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, to Japan and northern Australia. This broad range is possible only because its specific fungal partner, the Psathyrella candolleana species group, is also widely distributed.
In Thailand, the orchid appears in several regions, including the seasonal forests of the central, north-eastern, and south-western parts of the country. The flowering stalk emerges rapidly from the forest floor, typically after the first heavy monsoon rains, between April and June. The plant's reliance on this specific ecological niche, damp forests with decaying wood, makes it a sensitive indicator of forest health.
The entire visible part of the plant is dedicated to reproduction. The brownish, non-photosynthetic stalk pushes up through the leaf litter, and its flowers open to attract pollinators. After flowering, the plant produces ellipsoid-fusiform capsules that are 3-4 cm long, which contain thousands of tiny seeds. These seeds, like those of all orchids, lack their own food reserves and must land in a location where they can immediately form a relationship with a compatible fungus to survive and germinate. For Eulophia zollingeri, this means finding a spot already colonized by its Psathyrellaceae host.
