A direct line to the Paleozoic
Along the banks of the Emba River in western Kazakhstan, crude oil naturally bubbles to the surface. These are not industrial spills but are natural seeps, fed by underground petroleum deposits that have been leaking for centuries. The surrounding Emba oil basin is one of the oldest petroleum provinces in the world, with commercial discovery dating back to 1911. The entire region lies within the vast, energy-rich North Caspian Basin.
The oil itself records the past. Its history begins 280 million years ago, during the Permian Period. At that time, this arid region was a shallow tropical coastline of a vast sea called the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. This ancient ocean separated the supercontinent of Gondwana to the south from what would become Eurasia in the north. Over millions of years, countless marine microorganisms lived and died in this sea. Their organic remains settled on the seafloor and were buried under accumulating sediment, forming thick layers of organic-rich source rock. Geological analysis of oil from the broader region points to both carbonate and black shale source rocks, typical of a marine depositional environment.
