A different kind of inheritance
In the Bloubank Valley of South Africa, part of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, a collection of dolomite caves holds the remains of an ancient ecosystem. Cooper's Cave is not a single cavern but a series of eroded, fossil-rich deposits. The most studied of these, Cooper's D, contains fossils dated to between 1.5 and 1.4 million years ago. The site has yielded thousands of fossil specimens, including the remains of our extinct relative, Paranthropus robustus. This species, known for its powerful jaws and large chewing teeth, was not a direct ancestor of modern humans, but a side branch of our family tree.
The most significant finds from Cooper's Cave are several hand and finger bones of P. robustus. The anatomy of these bones demonstrates that this species possessed a precision grip, an ability thought to be unique to our own genus, Homo. This grip, enabled by a long thumb relative to the fingers and broad fingertips, is fundamental for the creation and effective use of complex tools. The discovery challenges the long-held idea that the anatomical ability to make sophisticated stone tools was a defining characteristic of early Homo.
