A different kind of inheritance
In the Bloubank Valley of South Africa, part of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, a collection of dolomite caves holds the remains of an ancient ecosystem. Cooper's Cave is not a single cavern but a series of eroded, fossil-rich deposits. The most studied of these, Cooper's D, contains fossils dated to between 1.5 and 1.4 million years ago. The site has yielded thousands of fossil specimens, including the remains of our extinct relative, Paranthropus robustus. This species, known for its powerful jaws and large chewing teeth, was not a direct ancestor of modern humans, but a side branch of our family tree.
The most significant finds from Cooper's Cave are several hand and finger bones of P. robustus. The anatomy of these bones demonstrates that this species possessed a precision grip, an ability thought to be unique to our own genus, Homo. This grip, enabled by a long thumb relative to the fingers and broad fingertips, is fundamental for the creation and effective use of complex tools. The discovery challenges the long-held idea that the anatomical ability to make sophisticated stone tools was a defining characteristic of early Homo.
Predators and prey
The fossil assemblage at Cooper's Cave shows the environment during the Early Pleistocene. Analysis of animal fossils suggests a mixed habitat of grasslands and woodlands near a permanent water source. The cave deposits contain the remains of over 90 animal species, providing a large sample of the local fauna. Among the fossils are extinct forms of pigs, antelopes, and horses like Equus capensis and the three-toed hipparion Eurygnathohippus.
The caves were also frequented by formidable predators. The fossil record includes several large cat species, such as the saber-toothed cat Megantereon and an early species of leopard. Multiple species of hyena, including the brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea), also used the area. Marks on some of the hominin and animal bones indicate that carnivores were a primary agent in the accumulation of remains within the cave system, likely using the fissures as dens. While 49 stone tools have been found at the site, along with a single bone tool, direct association with the P. robustus remains is still a subject of scientific investigation.
